Project:

Choose a company and design an office space in a 12,000 sq. ft. building (building shell provided).

 

The company I chose to design for: Outward Bound

 

Client Profile:

"Outward Bound is a non-profit educational organization that serves people of all ages and backgrounds through active learning expeditions that inspire character evelopment, self-discovery and service both in and out of the classroom. Outward Bound delivers wilderness-based programs to participants across the country and focuses its outreach on underserved youth. Customized courses provide curricula developed for struggling teens, groups with specific health, social or educational needs and business and professional organizations. Expeditionary Learning Schools Outward Bound offers a whole school reform model to more than 150 elementary and secondary schools throughout the country."

- Create a space that functions as both a working office environment and a nurturing learning environment.
- Provide a flexible plan that can be easily evolve as the company expands.
- Maintain goals of sustainability throughout the entire design.

 

Concept:

It’s easy to get lost in your own imagination. Especially when you grow up or live in a struggling situation.


What is the ultimate escape that a you could wish for? That one magical power that will allow you to go above and beyond the hard times life can hand you?

Outward Bound offers a similar experience, but one more down to Earth. One that provides someone with new opportunities and a chance to see the magical and exciting parts of life. The new Denver headquarters will inspire the employees and volunteers to take the Outward Bound experience to new heights.

 

Sustainable strategies:

- Space planning to accomodate for as much daylight to penetrate the space as possible.

- Low- or no-VOC finishes and furniture

- Water-efficient appliances

- Energy efficient appliances and equipment

- Products and finishes have high recycled content or are recycleable

- Exterior views for all work spaces

- FSC woods
